Brownsville
is a neighborhood in Brooklyn,
between Bedford-Stuyvesant and East New York. As early as
1910, the area has gotten a reputation as a slum, in the
1930s and 40s Brownsville was known for its criminal gangs
and organized crime groups. In the 1960s Brownsville was a
good example of an American ghetto. Today the neighborhood
is predominantly African-American, Caribbean and
Latin-American, conditions have improved since the 1960s,
but there are still many abandoned buildings.
I didn't actually
visit the neighborhood, that's why there are no pictures.
The bus, which I took from Ozone Park, Queens to
Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn went through East New York and
Brownsville. Through the window of the bus, that was all I
saw from the neighborhood, so I can't really tell much about
Brownsville, just what I have read about this neighborhood.
