FLATIRON DISTRICT

The Flatiron District is more or less the gap between Midtown and Lower Manhattan. The area is named after the Flatiron Building, a thin and gorgeous work of architecture in New York. The Flatiron Building was completed in 1902, thus it is one of the oldest skyscrapers of New York City. The Flatiron District offers nice architecture, many shopping opportunities and fine restaurants.

At the southern tip of the Flatiron District, at the intersection of Broadway and 14th Street, lies Union Square. Union Square is a historic square and important site of political and social activism, for example as a starting point for many political protests. Anti-war activists distributing peace literature and stickers can always be found there among big crowds of young and hip people who are hanging out. There is also a Greenmarket at Union Square where farmers sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products.
