Greenwich
Village, or simply the Village,
is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Manhattan. Since the
early 20th century artists, writers, entertainers and
intellectuals have lived in the Village, and today, besides
being a largely residential area, it has become a center of
nightlife. Once it was a rural hamlet, entirely
separate from New York - that is why its streets-layout
doesn't coincide with most of Manhattans grid-plan. New York's
University NYU is located there and in the center of the
Village lies the historic Washington Square Park which is
alive with students, skateborders and street performers during
the day. A part of Greenwich Village is also known as the
West Village where Christopher Street is located, a
worldwide symbol for the gay liberation movement.
