MOTT HAVEN

Mott Haven is the southernmost neighborhood in the South Bronx. It has one of the highest numbers of Puerto Rican residents in New York City. Mott Haven was the first neighborhood to give rise to the term "South Bronx", the name which was used to describe those neighborhoods in the Bronx that were affected by urban decay between the 1960s and 1990s. Despite improvements, Mott Haven remains a low-income neighborhood; a large number of its 50.000 inhabitants live in public housing projects.

The area south of Major Deegan Expressway, also known as Port Morris, is one of the few areas in the South Bronx, which started to experience some gentrification. Attracted by enormous loft spaces and cheap rents, some artists moved into the area around Bruckner Boulevard. The street is lined with some industrial shops and antique shops.
